Washington Nationals Acquire Ryan Madson, Sean Doolittle From Oakland Athletics

Ben Margot/ AP

The Washington Nationals were able to improve their struggling bullpen earlier this afternoon as they acquired Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle from the Oakland Athletics. Oakland got Blake Treinen and prospects Jesus Lozardo and Sheldon Neuse from Washington.

Madson has a 2.06 ERA this season and 86 career saves as a reliever so he’d be the most likely player to close with Doolittle potentially setting him up. He also has loads of playoff experience. Doolittle has also been good this year as he’s been striking out 13 batters per nine innings and lefties are 0-for-23 against him this season.

The Nationals have been leading the NL East for the entire season but their bullpen had been costing them games and giving up a lot of runs in the process. Getting Madson and Doolittle will help the bullpen a lot as they now have two relievers who can close for them if needed.

Oakland is in obvious sell mode and they may not be done yet as ace starter Sonny Gray has been generating lots of interest around the league.
