From 2009 to 2013 Joe Smith was a productive setup man for the Cleveland Indians. Now, he’ll be heading from Toronto back to Cleveland on this busy deadline Monday.

Smith has been a reliable reliever over the course of his career, although he’s striking batters out at a career-high pace this season (12.87 K/9). He’s the second pitcher to be traded by the Blue Jays today, with Francisco Liriano going to Houston.
In return, Toronto will receive Thomas Pannone and Samad Taylor:
Can confirm that Indians are sending LHP Thomas Pannone and 2B Samad Taylor to Toronto for Joe Smith. Neither on CLE’s @MLBPipeline Top 30.

Cleveland knows that it takes a quality bullpen to win games in October, and come this October they’ll be trotting out: Cody Allen, Andrew Miller, Bryan Shaw, and now Smith.
