Jack Curry of YES Network has reported that Sonny Gray is heading to the Yankees. He joins Luis Severino atop the Yankees rotation in one of the best 1-2 punches in the American League.
In return, the A’s will be receiving Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian and Dustin Fowler. Fowler is ranked 77th on MLB’s Top 100 Prospect List and the Yankees fourth ranked prospect, while Mateo is their eighth ranked prospect, and Kaprielian is their 12th ranked prospect. That being said, both Fowler (knee surgery) and Kaprielian (TJ surgery) are out for the season with major injuries, so this is a high risk/reward haul for the Athletics.
Gray is having a bounce-back season after a less-than-effective 2016. His FIP would be a full-season best (3.24), and his FanGraphs WAR (2.2) is in the top 15 among American League pitchers. Gray is under contract past this season, so he’ll be a long-term rotation piece for the Yankees. And he was much needed following the injury to Michael Pineda leaving a major hole in the Yankees rotation.
Gray joins newly acquired Jaime Garcia, and bullpen arms David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle as deadline pitching acquisitions. In this trade, the Yankees are also getting $1.5M in international slot money according to Mark Feinsand from MLB.com.
