Today, the Los Angeles Angels revealed that star two-way player Shohei Ohtani will eventually need Tommy John surgery after an MRI showed new damage to the UCL in Ohtani’s throwing arm.
It is believed that the pitcher/ designated hitter re-injured his arm Sunday night against the Houston Astros. The game was Ohtani’s first outing as a pitcher since June 6 and looked solid through the first two frames. But, his fastball lost significant velocity by the third inning and had to leave in the same inning after just 49 pitches.
The Japanese phenom recently became the first player since Babe Ruth to record 15 home runs and 50 innings pitched in the same season. Ohtani currently has a 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts, while also hitting .276 with 16 homers.
With less than a month to go in the season, the Los Angeles Angels are currently 15.5 games behind the Oakland Athletics for the final Wild-card spot in the American League.
