2017 Papa John’s NBA Power Rankings

Which NBA team will give it’s fans the best shot at 50% off Papa John’s?

Picture this: your team is down 15 points with 48 second remaining in the 4th quarter. You’re looking up from your phone, getting ready to leave, but you notice that all of a sudden, the fans are going wild. You check the scoreboard and realize that your team’s third string power forward just hit a three to put your guys up over 100 points.

You celebrate, you shed tears of joy, you thrust a singular fist triumphantly towards the bannerless rafters. Why? Because free food is why. Every fan knows the promotions of their local team and anxiously awaits that free large McDonald’s fries. Some teams, like the Lakers, give out tacos.

My personal favorite is the Washington Wizards who give ticket holders a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich if an opponent misses two consecutive free throws during the 4th quarter. Typically, at a Wizards game, it’s so quiet you could have a conversation with the guy two sections over. But for the magical moment when a Dwight Howard type player steps to the line, you get this:

Just look at the height this guy gets after realizing the best chicken sandwich for under $5 that money can buy.

These promotions are truly a magical thing. And while every team has slightly different promos, there are many teams that have some Papa John’s promo running throughout the course of the season.

Based on my extensive Google research, here are the rankings of the 11 NBA teams with Papa John’s promotions for the 2017-18 NBA season.

11. San Antonio Spurs

Promotion: 50% off on Wednesday’s when the Spurs play

2016 hits: 14 times

The Spurs are simply too reliable, for Papa John’s to offer any promotion based on performance. That being said, you can plan this out if you live in San Antonio. You know what Wednesday’s they’ll be playing on, so you can take full advantage that day, but eating a light lunch and then pigging out while watching the Spurs march towards another 60+ wins this season.

10. Atlanta Hawks

Promotion: 50% off after scoring 50 points in the first half

2016 hits: 38 times

Atlanta is in a battle with another team on this list, the Chicago Bulls, for quickest move from playoff team. I shed a tear for Hawks fans, who’s pizza promotions will promptly be cut in almost half. Who is even playing for the Hawks right now. I don’t think I can name two starters, let alone two members of that entire roster. The Hawks are clearly tired of being in 9th seed purgatory and instead have decided to enter lottery hell. At fans will still have three quarters of the Falcons to cheer for.

9. Chicago Bulls

Promotion: 50% off after Bulls wins

2016 hits: 41 times

This promotion would have ranked 7th on the list last year, but the Bulls are, simply put,  terrible. They have rid themselves of last years core, responsible for the majority of the 41 wins, and now are in full rebuild and full tank mode after getting really young, really quickly. The Bulls will be lucky if their fans can get 25 of these promotions this year.

8. Orlando Magic

Promotion: 50% off after Magic wins

2016 hits: 29 times

Orlando had a rough season last year, and don’t expect that to change in 2017. According to ESPN real plus minus, the Magic are only projected to win 32 games. While terrible, they can feel a little bit better about themselves knowing that they won’t be quite as bad as the Chicago Bulls.

7. Denver Nuggets

Promotion: 50% off after Nuggets wins

2016 hits: 40 times

With all that energy they spend running in gunning in the Mile High City, the Nuggets and their fans could afford a few extra discount pizzas this season, which is exactly what they should expect. After signing Paul Millsap and re-upping Gary Harris, Denver is in position to climb back into the playoffs for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

6. Utah Jazz

Promotion: 50% off after Jazz wins

2016 hits: 51 times

Losing Gordon Hayward is a huge loss, for this team, but don’t count out the Jazz. They still have Rudy Gobert, who is a defensive monster and an extremely efficient offensive option. Instead of tweeting about saxophones, Gobert should get the crowd hyped by tweeting out about 45 or so of those pizza emoji.

5. Washington Wizards

Promotion: 50% off after Wizards wins where they score 100 points

2016 hits: 46 times

Clearly the Papa John’s in the the DMV are a bit savvier than than these other teams. Yes the promotion is triggered by a win, but the Wizards have to score 100 points. Fortunately for Wizard’s fans, 94% of their wins came in games where they scored at least 100 points. If Washington fans can summon some of that Chick-Fil-A energy early in the game, they may help their team squeak out a few more wins.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers

Promotion: 50% off after Cavs wins

2016 hits: 51 times

LeBron James sat out a decent of games last season, but with the NBA increasing the number of days in the season and reducing back-to-backs, LeBron may be able to suit up for few more games this season and at least fill the bellies of Cavs fans before going out to join the Lakers next year.

3. Charlotte Hornets

Promotion: 50% off after Hornets score 95 points in a game

2016 hits: 69 times

We finally get to the good stuff. The big ticket items. For Hornets fans, pizza is forever within their grasp. They don;t even need to win, just get to a measly 95 points. It’s 2017 and NBA teams are playing faster and shooting higher valued shots. Even with the utter lack of talent on the Hornets, the least competent of NBA teams should be regularly getting to 100 points.

2. Indiana Pacers

Promotion: 50% off after Pacers score 90 points in a game

2016 hits: 74 times

In their opening game this season, the Pacers dropped 140 points. That’s a metric crap-ton of buckets. Over the past couple years, the Pacers have attempted to move more towards a fast paced high scoring option, which is good for fans as they should guts full of half off Italian treats all season.

1. Milwaukee Bucks

Promotion: 50% off after Bucks score 90 points in a game

2016 hits: 73 times

The Bucks are big winners on this list. With Giannis Antetokounmpo poised to take a huge step forward, the Bucks should be getting to 100 points on a near nightly bas. Giannis is still getting accustomed to American culture. Just look at the way he reacted after tasting a smoothie a few years ago.

If he has yet to taste the delicious treat that is Papa John’s pizza, he will be in for an even bigger surprise.
