Mike Conley announced Wednesday that he and his teammates will cover the $30,000 fine handed down to their coach, David Fizdale, for the comments he made during his post-game press conference on Monday. After the Grizzlies’ 96-82 loss to the Spurs, Fizdale went on a tirade, calling the referees’ work “unprofessional” and “unacceptable.”
The Grizzlies and the city of Memphis have both rallied around Fizdale after his comments received flak from the media.
“It’s been fantastic. I have felt that everywhere I’ve went in the city. The text messages. Obviously, my wife is big into social media, so I get a lot of the social media craziness. It’s been some funny stuff. I got to be honest with you. I wasn’t expecting all that.” -David Fizdale
Fizdale’s main complaint in his tirade was the disparity in free throws between the two sides despite the Grizzlies’ heavy advantage in shots attempted in the paint. The Spurs shot 32 free throws while the Grizzlies shot 15. In contrast, the Spurs only had 18 attempts in the paint and the Grizzlies took 35 attempts in the paint. The Grizzlies will look to bounce back from the 0-2 deficit with a victory at home on Thursday night.
