After missing a three-pointer midway through yesterday’s playoff loss to the Bulls, Marcus Smart gave the middle finger to a fan sitting court side. Along with the middle finger, Smart also gestured to the fan to sit down. The NBA announced that Smart was fined $25,000 for his actions.
The action took place with 6:07 left in the fourth quarter, while the Celtics were trailing 100-86. It was a rough game for not only the Celtics, but also for Smart. In the 111-97 loss to the Bulls, Smart put up 13 points, eight rebounds, and two steals while shooting 25% from behind the ark.
The Celtics now head to Chicago down 2-0 in the series. This was a series that most people thought the Celtics would win easily. Head coach Brad Stevens called the gesture unacceptable.
Stevens said earlier in a conference call, “I saw a brief video clip of it but, from my clip, from the angle that I saw, I couldn’t tell. But obviously if he made a gesture, it’s unacceptable, and that will be handled by the league.”
