The Houston Rockets have come to terms with free agent small forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. The deal is for one season for the veteran’s minimum ($2.3 million for the ‘17-18 season). Earlier this offseason, Mbah a Moute declined his player option worth the same amount with the LA Clippers.
The 30-year-old forward is widely regarded as one of the better defenders at the wing position. Last year as the nominal fifth starter in LA, Mbah a Moute averaged 6.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.0 steals a game in his 76 starts. He also had a career year from deep, shooting 39% from three on 1.4 attempts a game.
Defensively, he will fill a role similar to fellow free agent signing P.J. Tucker, as wing stoppers hold real value in the fast-paced D’Antoni system. If his ‘16-17 three point shot is the new norm and not an aberration, Mbah a Moute could prove to be a savvy and valuable signing.
