This year’s NBA trade deadline came with many surprising deals, mostly involving the Cleveland Cavaliers, but one last second deal came as a big surprise to many Orlando Magic fans.
The Magic completed a deal just before 3PM on Thursday to send point guard Elfrid Payton to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a 2018 second round draft pick.
Payton was selected 10th overall by Orlando in 2014, and has averaged 11.1 points and 6.4 assists in his four years there. He is currently averaging a career high 13.0 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.0 rebounds this season, all while shooting 52% from the field.
Even though Payton has been a solid player for Orlando during his career, he will enter the free agent market this off-season. Not expecting him to re-sign, the Magic did not want to let him go with no return.
Payton will give the Suns much needed depth in the backcourt, and should make a considerable impact along side Devin Booker and Tyler Ulis.
