Dwane Casey has signed a contract averaging about $7 million a year with the Detroit Pistons. The reigning coach of the year is tasked with turning around a franchise that has not made the playoffs in two straight seasons. The former Toronto Raptors head coach’s contract lasts 5 years as the 36th head coach in Pistons history.
A news conference is not expected until next week, as Casey will travel immediately to meet the players in Los Angeles where most of them workout. Casey will then head back to Detroit after Father’s day.
Pistons owner Tom Gores will expect to reach the playoffs after he fired Stan Van Gundy almost 4 weeks after the end of the season with a 39-43 record. Van Gundy was relieved of his duties as team president and coach after reaching the postseason once in four seasons.
