The Toronto Raptors are promoting assistant coach Nick Nurse to become the franchise’s next head coach. The terms of the contract have yet to be finalized, but Nurse met with team president Masai Ujiri and GM Bobby Webster on Tuesday morning to accept the head coaching position.
Nurse is an internal hire for the Toronto Raptors, as he has been an assistant coach under Dwane Casey for the past five seasons. Nurse, who is 50 years old, will replace Casey as the Raptors’ head coach, after the team decided to fire Casey due to being swept out of the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second straight season.
Nurse has six years of head coaching experience in the NBA G League. During those six seasons, Nurse won two championships, as well as a Coach of the Year award. Nurse will be expected to have success right away, however, as he will be coaching the season after the Raptors set their franchise’s record for wins with a 59-win 2017-18 regular season.
