The NBA and WNBA have reached an agreement with MGM Resorts to make the company their exclusive gaming partner. This is the first time a major sports league in the U.S. has partnered with a sports betting operator. The deal is said to be worth at least $25 million over three years.
The deal allows for MGM to use team and league logos, direct data from games, and highlights from around the league. An MGM sports betting app (which will have all said features of the deal) is also said to be in the works
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the media, stating: ”As the landscape for sports betting in the U.S. continues to evolve at a rapid pace, MGM Resorts is a proven gaming leader for us to work with on this groundbreaking partnership.” While CEO Jim Murren of MGM Resorts called the deal “historic”.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in May that states can now legalize sports betting. Ultimately breaking the monopoly that Nevada previously had on the industry. More partnerships are likely to follow in the coming months and years, as the PGA and MLB (along with the NBA) were strong lobbyists in states to legalize sports betting.
