Bamba, a Harlem native, said that his time spent playing for Texas coach Shaka Smart on the U18 Team USA squad was one of the biggest reasons for his decision. He also mentioned the progress that his friend, Jarrett Allen, made during his one season at Texas. Allen is projected to be a first-round pick in this year’s draft despite a rocky season for the team as a whole.

Bamba is the third-ranked player in ESPN’s prospect rankings and is the highest regarded recruit that Smart has been able to land during his two years at Texas. Texas is expected to be much improved this year despite the loss of Allen, especially if star guard Andrew Jones stays another year. Jones will be making his decision in the coming days on whether he will enter the draft this year. Shaka Smart made a statement Thursday regarding the news of Bamba’s decision.

“I’m extremely excited that Mo has chosen Texas. He’s as unique a person and player as I’ve been around. Mo’s combination of talent, intellect and ability to impact others will make him a catalyst in our program and on our campus from day one.” -Shaka Smart
