The New England Patriots claimed Martellus Bennett off waivers today after he was released from the Green Bay Packers yesterday. Green Bay waived him yesterday after he failed to disclose a physical condition that he was dealing with.
Bennett comes back to the Patriots after spending last season with them. He had 55 catches and 701 yards with seven touchdowns as he was a big part of the Patriots offense in their Super Bowl run.
Bennett will replace Dwayne Allen who doesn’t have a catch yet this season and will play behind Rob Gronkowski, who’s back to full health this season.
After this season, Bennett has a $2M bonus in his three year contract he originally signed with the Packers and if New England doesn’t pick it up, he’s a free agent again.
To make room for Bennett on the active roster, the Patriots waived defensive end Geneo Grissom.
