The Houston Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson got some playing time during the team’s first regular season game on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This came after starting QB Tom Savage was benched at halftime. Savage completed just 7 of 13 passes for 62 yards, fumbled twice, and was sacked six times in the first half. Now Savage will get his chance to start this week for Thursday Night Football.
Both NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network’s James Palmer reported that per sources the Texans decided to go with Watson as the starter for their Thursday night matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
In Sunday’s game, Watson went 12 for 23 for 102 yards. Although he was sacked four times, lost fumbles, and had an interception, he helped the team to their only touchdown of the day. Watson left the game with an ankle injury, but by Tuesday he was listed as a full participant. It seems likely that Watson will start, he took first team reps on Tuesday. But, head coach Bill O’Brien refused to confirm the news.
