The Ottawa Senators have traded their All-Star defenseman and team captain Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks. In return, the Senators received center Chris Tierney, defenseman Dylan DeMelo, prospects Josh Norris and Rudolfs Balcers, a conditional 2019 second-round pick, and a conditional 2020 first-round pick.
Karlsson is entering the final year of what was a seven-year, $45 million contract. If Karlsson was to re-sign with the Sharks after this season, then San Jose must send a conditional 2021 second-round pick to Ottawa as well. Karlsson was ultimately traded after he could not come to an agreement on a long-term contract extension with the Senators.
Erik Karlsson is a two-time Norris Trophy winner, which is awarded to the NHL’s top defensive player following each season. Last season, Karlsson registered 62 points in 71 games for Ottawa. Over his entire nine-year career with the Senators, Karlsson has racked up 518 points in 627 games. Just two years removed from a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Senators will look to rebuild after finishing in 7th place in the Atlantic Division a season ago.
