It wasn’t a knockout, but the result was still the same for Gennady Golovkin.
Golovkin was able to go the full 12 rounds to outlast Daniel Jacobs and retain the WBO, WBC, IBO and IBF middleweight titles. The victory improves Triple G’s record to 37-0 with 33 KOs.
The decision ends Golovkin’s streak of 23 fights ended in knockout fashion but keeps the unblemished record intact. It also appears to set up a potential super fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, assuming Alvarez can defeat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next month.
With the loss, Jacobs’ record falls to 32-2. A victory would have been a great capper to a comeback story that has seen the fighter return from bone cancer.
