Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late penalty kick and Real Madrid defeated Juventus 4-3 on aggregate on Wednesday to advance to the Champions League semifinals after a remarkable comeback from the Italian side.
The aggregate scoring was 3-0 in favor of Real Madrid coming into Wednesday’s second leg match, but that all changed quickly.
Mario Mandzukic slotted two goals, one coming just two minutes into the game and the other in the 37th minute.
Blaise Matuidi added the equalizer in the 60th minute after a major blunder by Real Madrid’s goaltender, Keylor Navas.
The controversial finish to the game began when Juventus defender Mehdi Benatia made an aggressive challenge in the box on Real Madrid’s Javier Vasquez. Referee Michael Oliver awarded Real Madrid a penalty kick, leading to the ejection of the heated Gianluigi Buffon.
Cristiano Ronaldo then did what he does best, and sent a rocket into the upper right corner of the goal, leaving no chance for substitute goalie Wojciech Szczesny.
