On Tuesday morning, Sporting CP’s training session was interrupted as nearly 50 angry fans broke into the facility, assaulting players and staff. The attackers wore hoodies and masks to avoid recognition and some were armed with pipes and knives.
Dutch striker Bas Dost suffered head injuries during the attack, and the images that have circulated around social media have drawn strong reactions from fans around the world. Jorge Jesus, the head coach, was also targeted and one of the team’s physiotherapists was also stabbed.
“Sporting is not this, Sporting can not be this,” the club said in a statement. “We will make every effort to establish full responsibility for what has happened and we will demand the punishment of those who acted in this absolutely pitiful way.” Sporting lost their Champions League berth on Saturday in a dramatic loss to Maratimo and were booed off the field by their travelling support.
Sporting plays Aves this weekend in the Taca de Portugal final, and PTjournal.com is suggesting that players are considering boycotting the game and possibly terminating their contracts with the team.
